Pride is a time of celebration, reflection, and advocacy for the LGBTQIA+ community. It's a chance to honour the progress made towards equality while acknowledging the challenges that persist. At GCRP, we believe that everyone deserves to feel connected and empowered, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
That's why we're thrilled to be collaborating with Gloucestershire Heritage Hub and Pride in Gloucestershire on the 2024 Pride Campaign, championing two core aims:
Preserving LGBTQIA+ Histories: We're collecting stories from the community about their experiences of living in Gloucestershire as an LGBTQIA+ person. These stories, experiences, and contributions will be held by the archives for years to come, filling crucial gaps in the history of LGBTQIA+ people across the county. Which will be turned into a map of LGBTQ+ Gloucestershire.
Enhancing Travel Accessibility: We're co-producing a travel, transport, and accessibility survey to highlight the needs, challenges, and issues surrounding the community in relation to travel and transport across Gloucestershire. The results of the survey will inform a report shared with key stakeholders to advocate for positive change.
Why Pride & Transport Matter
Pride events offer a safe and welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ individuals to express themselves, connect with others, and celebrate their identities. However, for many people in rural or isolated areas, accessing these events can be a significant challenge. Transportation barriers, such as limited public transport options or fear of discrimination, can prevent individuals from participating fully in Pride and the broader LGBTQIA+ community.
Research shows that LGBTQIA+ people in rural areas are more likely to experience social isolation and mental health challenges due to lack of access to supportive communities and services. By making transport more accessible and inclusive, we can help break down these barriers and create a more connected society where everyone feels safe and empowered to be themselves.
Our Vision: A More Connected and Inclusive Gloucestershire
At GCRP, we envision a future where every LGBTQIA+ person in Gloucestershire feels connected and empowered, with the freedom to travel safely and comfortably, whether attending Pride events, visiting loved ones, or simply exploring their community. We're committed to amplifying LGBTQIA+ voices, preserving their stories, and advocating for a transport network that meets the needs of all.
What We've Heard So Far
Through our engagement at Pride events and online surveys, we've gathered valuable insights into the experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals in Gloucestershire:
Safety and Comfort: Many people feel more comfortable travelling in groups or with trusted individuals, especially in unfamiliar environments or in situations where large groups can be noisy and intimidating.
Accessibility: Physical accessibility, clear signage, and accessible information are crucial for individuals with disabilities or mobility challenges. Beyond physical access, the LGBTQIA+ community calls for greater support for hidden disabilities & neurodiversity, including quiet spaces on public transport.
Affordability: The cost of transport can be a significant barrier, especially for those on low incomes or facing financial hardship.
Rural Isolation: Limited public transport options in rural areas can leave individuals feeling trapped and disconnected from the broader community. While limited public transport can lead to isolation, LGBTQIA+ communities are creatively finding ways to connect in rural areas, highlighting the desire for greater access to cities and support for these grassroots initiatives.
Mapping Our Histories: The project has unearthed a wide range of LGBTQIA+ stories, from first prides to hidden histories, helping us map and celebrate the vibrant lives across Gloucestershire.
Empowering LGBTQIA+: What We Hope to Achieve
Through our Pride campaign and ongoing efforts, we aim to:
Empower LGBTQIA+ voices: Capture, preserve and understand the LGBTQIA+ experiences in Gloucestershire.
Advocate for change: Use the survey data to advocate for improved transport accessibility and inclusivity at the local and regional level.
Foster connection: Create a more connected and supportive community where everyone feels safe and empowered to be themselves.
